Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Viessmann, Ideal, Baxi, Glow-worm & Potterton — symptoms, causes and fixes explained

Boiler issues across Wokingham, Earley, Woodley and surrounding areas follow predictable patterns. Many can be resolved with a simple reset or repressurise — others are clear signals to stop and call a Gas Safe engineer. 9 common boiler problems — symptoms, causes & fixes

Work through each section to identify your issue. Problems marked in red are safety-critical — stop and call immediately if you encounter these.

Low boiler pressure
Symptoms
Pressure gauge below 1 bar
No heating or hot water — F1, F22 or A1 fault code showing
Boiler fired and then shut down
Common causes
Recently bled radiators (most common)
Slow hidden leak in pipework or radiator
Failing expansion vessel
Try this first
1
Locate the filling loop under the boiler — a silver braided hose with lever handles.
2
Slowly open the lever(s) until the pressure gauge reads 1.5 bar, then close fully.
3
Press Reset for 3 seconds. The fault code should clear.
Topping up more than twice a year? Expansion vessel or hidden leak — book a diagnostic →
Boiler making whistling or banging noises (kettling)
Symptoms
Whistling, rumbling or banging from the boiler
Sounds like a boiling kettle
Linked to F4 or F24 overtemperature faults
Common causes
Limescale on the heat exchanger — very common in Wokingham’s hard water area
Magnetite sludge restricting water flow
Air trapped in the system
Try this first
1
Bleed the radiators to release any trapped air (this is a DIY job — use a radiator key).
2
If the noise persists, the heat exchanger has sludge or scale — a professional powerflush is needed.
3
Ask about fitting a magnetic filter to prevent recurrence.
Left untreated, kettling will crack the heat exchanger — expensive. Book a diagnostic →
Boiler keeps turning off (short cycling)
Symptoms
Boiler fires up then shuts down within a few minutes
Heating never reaches temperature
Error code reappears after reset
Common causes
Faulty or badly positioned thermostat
Oversized boiler for the property
Low water pressure or blocked heat exchanger
Malfunctioning pressure valve or PCB
Try this first
1
Check thermostat is not positioned near a heat source (radiator, sunlight) — move it if so.
2
Check system pressure is at 1.5 bar and repressurise if needed.
3
If the fault persists after a single reset, engineer diagnosis is needed.
Short cycling is a silent killer for boiler longevity. Book a diagnostic →
Should I repair or replace my boiler?
Signs it’s time to replace
Boiler is over 10–12 years old
Requiring repairs more than once a year
Repair cost exceeds 50% of a new boiler
Energy bills rising despite servicing
Signs repair is fine
Boiler is under 8 years old
First or second fault in its lifetime
Still under manufacturer warranty
What to do
1
Book a diagnostic first — we’ll give you an honest repair vs replace recommendation.
2
If replacing, a new A-rated boiler typically cuts gas bills by 15–30%.
Boiler leaking water
Symptoms
Puddles or damp patches around the base
Visible drips from the unit or pipework
Pressure dropping repeatedly
Common causes
Failing pressure relief valve (most common)
Corroded heat exchanger or internal seals
Loose pipework connections
What to do immediately
1
Switch off the boiler at the wall switch.
2
Turn off the water supply if the leak is significant.
3
Do not restart the boiler — call a Gas Safe engineer.
A small drip today can short-circuit the PCB tomorrow. Book an urgent repair → or call 07850 116944
Boiler shut down in cold weather — frozen condensate pipe
Symptoms
Boiler stops working overnight in freezing temperatures
F28, L2, EA or similar ignition fault code showing
Gurgling sound from condensate pipe
Common causes
External plastic condensate pipe has frozen solid overnight
Very common in Wokingham, Finchampstead and Crowthorne in winter
DIY fix (no engineer needed)
1
Find the white or grey plastic condensate pipe exiting the wall behind your boiler.
2
Pour warm — not boiling — water along the pipe to thaw the blockage.
3
Press and hold the Reset button for 3–5 seconds.
This resolves most winter call-outs at no cost. If the fault returns after thawing, call 07850 116944
Boiler not turning on — no display, no response
Symptoms
No lights, display or sounds from the boiler
Boiler completely unresponsive
Common causes
RCD tripped at the consumer unit (fuse box)
Blown fuse on the PCB
Overheated pump or motor
Try this first
1
Check your consumer unit — has an RCD or circuit breaker tripped? Reset it if so.
2
Confirm the boiler isolator switch on the wall is in the ‘on’ position.
3
If still no response, the PCB or internal fuse needs engineer inspection.
We carry diagnostic tools to identify exactly where the circuit has failed. Book a repair →
How to prevent boiler breakdowns
Most common preventable faults
Ignition lockouts from dirty burner or blocked condensate
Pressure drops from expanding vessel failure
Overtemperature faults from heat exchanger sludge
Preventive actions
Annual Gas Safe service — the single most effective prevention
Magnetic filter fitted — traps sludge before it blocks sensors
Powerflush on older systems with sludge history
Book before winter
1
Book your annual service in late summer/early autumn before demand peaks.
2
Ask about fitting a magnetic filter at the same visit for £150.
Radiators not heating up or heating unevenly
Symptoms
Some or all radiators cold
Cold at the top (air) or cold at the bottom (sludge)
Entire system lukewarm — boiler running but no heat
Diagnosis by symptom
Cold at top → trapped air — bleed the radiator (DIY fix)
Cold at bottom → iron oxide sludge — powerflush needed
All lukewarm → pump losing flow strength — engineer needed
One radiator cold → seized TRV or lockshield valve
DIY fix (cold at top only)
1
Use a radiator key to open the bleed valve at the top corner of the radiator.
2
Hold a cloth underneath. Release air until water runs out steadily, then close.
3
Check boiler pressure and repressurise to 1.5 bar if it has dropped.
