Boiler not working — but no error code showing?
Not every Potterton fault throws a clean code. These are the problems Stuart sees most often that turn up without one.
Boiler completely dead, blank display
Check the fused spur and any nearby RCD first — sounds obvious, but it's the most common cause. If it's definitely got power and still won't wake up, it's usually a failed PCB on older Promax and Performa units.
Tries to fire but won't catch, no code yet
On some older Potterton models the ignition electrode wears gradually and causes intermittent failed lighting attempts before it ever throws a proper fault code. Worth catching early — it only gets worse.
Heating works sometimes, not others
Usually points to a failing pressure or flow sensor giving inconsistent readings, rather than a hard failure. These faults are notoriously hit-and-miss about actually displaying a code.
Should you repair or replace it?
Depends on the model and the fault, not just the age. As a rough guide: under 10 years old, repair is almost always worth it. Over 15 years, particularly on Promax and older Suprima units, parts — especially PCBs — are getting harder to source, and if a quoted repair runs to around 40% or more of a new boiler installed, replacement usually works out better value over the next few years.
