What is a TRV?

Stop heating the rooms you’re not in

A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) is a self-regulating valve fitted to an individual radiator. As the room warms up, the valve senses the rising temperature and automatically reduces the flow of hot water into the radiator. When the room cools, it opens again. The result: every room in your home maintains its own set temperature without you touching a thing.

Without TRVs, your boiler has no way of knowing that the bedroom is already warm while the lounge is cold. It heats everything equally until your wall thermostat is satisfied — wasting energy on rooms that don’t need it. TRVs solve this by giving each radiator its own independent control.

Building Regulations Part L now require TRVs on all radiators when replacing a boiler — but most homes built before 2000 have either no TRVs or old, worn-out valves that have lost their sensitivity and no longer regulate properly.

  • Up to 17% reduction in heating bills by stopping overheating in unused or already-warm rooms
  • Room-by-room temperature control — keep bedrooms cool for sleeping, living spaces warmer
  • Fast payback — typically recovers installation cost within 1–2 winters
  • Works on existing radiators — retrofitted without replacing the radiator in almost all cases
  • Boiler longevity — a balanced system with TRVs reduces boiler cycling and wear

Standard vs smart

Manual TRV or Smart TRV — which is right for you?

Both types save energy and improve comfort compared to no TRV. The right choice depends on how much control you want and whether you already have a smart thermostat.

Is your TRV stuck? Diagnose the problem

The most common TRV problem is a seized pin — the small brass pin inside the valve body that the thermostatic head pushes to regulate flow. Pins corrode and stick when valves haven’t been turned for several years. The symptom tells you which way it’s stuck.

Radiator stays permanently hot
Symptom: Hot regardless of TRV setting, even on minimum or zero

The TRV pin is stuck open. Hot water is flowing through the radiator continuously because the pin cannot rise to restrict the valve. The thermostatic head is turning but not moving anything underneath. The radiator cannot be turned down from the TRV alone — only from the boiler thermostat or programmer.

Common fixRemove the thermostatic head and try working the pin in and out with a cloth or small pliers. If corroded solid, the valve body needs replacing. Stuart can often free a stuck pin on the first visit without replacing the valve.
Radiator won’t heat up at all
Symptom: Cold even on max setting, other radiators heating fine

The TRV pin is stuck closed. Hot water cannot enter the radiator because the pin is holding the valve closed regardless of the head position. First check the TRV is not set to frost/zero — then check the lockshield valve at the other end of the radiator is open. If both are fine, the pin is seized.

Common fixRemove the thermostatic head. If the pin is visible and depressed, try lifting it with a small tool. If corroded or snapped, the valve needs replacing. Usually resolved in a single visit within an hour.

Not sure which issue you have? Call Stuart on 07850 116944 and describe the symptom — he can often diagnose over the phone and tell you whether it’s something you can sort yourself or whether a visit is needed.

Why balancing matters

TRVs work better with a balanced system

TRVs control how much heat each room gets — but they can only work with the hot water that actually reaches them. If your central heating system is unbalanced, radiators close to the boiler get the majority of the flow while those further away receive barely any. The lounge is sweltering while the back bedroom never gets warm.

System balancing adjusts the lockshield valve on each radiator — the one at the opposite end from the TRV — to restrict flow to nearer radiators and allow more through to those further away. This evens out the heat distribution so every TRV is working with adequate flow to do its job properly.

Signs your system needs balancing

Some radiators take much longer to heat up than others. Radiators nearest the boiler get too hot. Far-end radiators never reach full temperature even on a high setting. Or you have recently fitted new TRVs and noticed uneven performance across the house.

01
Turn all radiators fully on
Open all lockshield valves and set all TRVs to maximum. Allow the system to heat up fully and reach operating temperature.
02
Measure radiator temperatures
Use a clip thermometer to measure flow and return pipe temperatures on each radiator. The target is an 11–12°C temperature drop across each radiator.
03
Adjust lockshield valves
Starting with the radiator closest to the boiler, gradually close the lockshield valve until the temperature drop reaches the target. Work outward to each subsequent radiator.
04
Verify and fine-tune
Allow the system to stabilise and re-check temperatures. Fine-tune until all radiators heat up within a similar timeframe and maintain the correct temperature drop.

FAQ

TRV questions — Wokingham

Common questions from homeowners across Wokingham and RG40 about TRV installation, smart valves and system balancing.

How much does TRV installation cost in Wokingham?
Standard TRV installation starts at £60 per radiator across Wokingham and RG40. Smart TRVs (Hive, Tado, Nest) are priced on the number of zones and brand — call 07850 116944 for a quote. Full system balancing is available from £120.
Can TRVs be fitted to old radiators?
In the vast majority of cases, yes — modern TRVs can be retrofitted to existing radiators without replacing them. The valve head and body are replaced while the radiator itself stays in place. If the system has not had a powerflush recently, this is a good time to consider one — old sludge in the system can block new valves prematurely.
Do I need a TRV on every radiator?
Almost — with one exception. The radiator in the same room as your main wall thermostat should not have a TRV. It should be left on a fully open lockshield valve so the thermostat can accurately measure room temperature. All other radiators benefit from a TRV. Building Regulations Part L require TRVs on all radiators in new or replacement boiler installations.
What is the difference between a standard TRV and a smart TRV?
A standard TRV uses a wax or liquid sensing element to regulate hot water flow mechanically — no power, no connectivity. A smart TRV connects to your home Wi-Fi and works with your smart thermostat hub (Hive, Tado, Nest) to give room-by-room scheduling, smartphone control, geofencing, and in some cases energy monitoring through the app. Smart TRVs fall back to manual operation if your internet goes down.
My radiator stays permanently hot even with the TRV on minimum — why?
This is almost always a stuck TRV pin. The small brass pin inside the valve body has seized in the open position due to corrosion from sitting in the same position for years. The thermostatic head is turning but not actually moving the pin. In many cases the pin can be freed without replacing the valve — call Stuart on 07850 116944 to discuss before booking a visit.
What is system balancing and do I need it alongside TRVs?
System balancing is the process of adjusting the lockshield valve on each radiator so that hot water is distributed evenly throughout the system. Without balancing, radiators nearest the boiler get the bulk of the flow while far-end radiators get little. TRVs control how much of that flow reaches each room, but if the overall distribution is uneven, TRVs cannot fully compensate. Thermotec provides balancing advice with all TRV installations and offers full system balancing from £120.
