Hive, Nest and tado° — what each system actually offers
Beyond the marketing, here’s what distinguishes each system in practice — and what to consider before choosing.
Hive Trained Engineers have completed Hive’s accredited installer programme. This qualification allows full Hive system installation including Smart TRVs, multi-zone configuration and Hive Hub commissioning — all done correctly so that zone control actually works as intended. A standard plumber can fit the receiver, but only a trained installer can configure the full system properly. Stuart is a Hive Trained Engineer based in Wokingham.
The key Hive advantage is its Smart TRV ecosystem. Hive Smart TRVs pair directly with the Hive Hub and allow room-by-room scheduling from the app — genuinely useful for larger homes where different rooms have very different usage patterns. No other brand integrates TRV zone control as seamlessly with the main thermostat.
Hive does not support OpenTherm modulation — it controls the boiler with a simple on/off signal. This is fine for most systems but means it cannot extract the additional gas savings available via modulation on compatible boilers.
- Best-in-class Smart TRV zone control — pairs with Hive Hub
- Works without internet (local hub control maintained)
- Multizone for homes with heating and hot water zones
- Physical dial on thermostat — easy for all household members
- Geofencing, scheduling, holiday mode via app
- Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant
The Nest’s technical advantage is OpenTherm. On compatible boilers (most modern Vaillant ecoTEC and Worcester Bosch Greenstar models), Nest connects via the OpenTherm port and controls the boiler’s output level rather than simply switching it on and off. This allows modulating combustion — the boiler fires at a lower output when the home is nearly up to temperature rather than at full power — reducing gas consumption further compared to on/off control.
Nest Pro installation by a Gas Safe engineer is required to keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid. The Heat Link must be wired to the boiler’s internal circuit correctly — not something to cut corners on.
- Auto-learning schedule — programs itself from your habits
- OpenTherm modulation on compatible boilers
- Home/Away Assist using phone GPS geofencing
- Energy history in app — shows hours of heating used
- Seasonal Savings — small schedule adjustments to reduce usage
- Integrates with Google Home, Alexa, IFTTT
tado° supports OpenTherm on compatible boilers and also includes weather compensation — it pre-emptively adjusts the heating schedule based on outside temperature forecasts, so the home is warm by the time you need it without the boiler overcooking on a mild day.
tado° operates on a subscription model for some advanced features (the Auto-Assist subscription unlocks geofencing automation and open window detection). Basic scheduling and manual control are free. This is worth understanding before purchase — the full feature set has an ongoing cost that Hive and Nest do not have.
- OpenTherm modulation on compatible boilers
- Weather compensation — adjusts based on outside temperature
- Best-in-class energy reporting and consumption data
- Smart Radiator Thermostats for room-by-room control
- Open window detection — pauses heating when window opened
- Geofencing with multiple household members

OpenTherm — what it is and why it matters
Most thermostats — including Hive — control your boiler with a simple on/off signal. When the home is cold, the thermostat closes a relay, the boiler fires at full output, the home heats up, the relay opens and the boiler stops. This is perfectly functional, but it’s not the most efficient way to heat a home.
OpenTherm is a digital communication standard that allows a thermostat to send detailed instructions to the boiler rather than just an on/off signal. Instead of “fire at full power,” an OpenTherm thermostat can say “I need the flow temperature to be 50°C, not 80°C, because the home is nearly at target temperature.” The boiler modulates its output accordingly.
The result is a system that runs more continuously at lower outputs rather than cycling on and off at full power. This reduces thermal shock on the heat exchanger, reduces boiler noise, and — most importantly — can reduce gas consumption by a further 10–15% compared to on/off control on the same boiler.
Does your boiler support OpenTherm?
Not all boilers have an OpenTherm port. It’s common on modern condensing boilers from Vaillant and Worcester Bosch. Stuart checks OpenTherm compatibility during the installation booking — if your boiler supports it and you want Nest or tado°, he’ll make sure the wiring is correct for the OpenTherm connection.

Why professional Gas Safe installation matters
Smart thermostats are available in retail stores for DIY fitting. Here’s why professional installation by a Gas Safe engineer is worth it — especially for the Nest, which requires it for warranty validity.

“Stuart installed our Hive system including Smart TRVs in the main rooms. He’s clearly the right person for this — knows the system inside out. Set everything up on our phones, showed us how the zones work and left us completely comfortable. The control we have now over each room is brilliant.”
“We had a Nest installed by Stuart as part of our new Vaillant boiler. He wired it via OpenTherm so it actually modulates the boiler rather than just switching it on and off. He explained the difference clearly — it runs more quietly and the bills are noticeably lower. Excellent work.”
“Called Stuart for advice before booking — not sure whether Hive or Nest was right for us. He spent 10 minutes on the phone asking about our boiler, how we use our heating and what we actually wanted. Recommended Hive based on our setup. Installed same week. Brilliant, honest advice.”
